Wedding Vows

Throughout time and history people have found ways to connect. None have done so with complete recognition and understanding as the world watches. Over time promises of devotion and monogamy have been done with a simple gesture. A verbal contract. These days the contract is real. A piece of paper that is recognized the world over. A marriage license.

The verbal promises that are made differ these days. They are the wedding vows. Simply put they are promises one makes to another, securing a relationship and forging a bond between them in front of others, the courts and the church. Sometimes with nothing more than 2 little words such as I will or I do. Some vows are traditional, set in the demands of the culture.

Others are personalized trying to influence a mood or feeling, to express to others the depth of a relationship. Some have difficulty expressing how they feel because facing what they feel is overwhelming or are not able to put feelings in words. So they need some help. Wedding vows are nothing more than words like the ones in this article and yet somehow they transcend time and revolutionize the art of marriage, defining a moment in time that would be otherwise considered just another change in ones life.

And still wedding vows seem to mean so much more. They are not just words uttered. They are one heart opening to another and allowing love to fill it, as the other does the same. They are a magical moment when even the strongest of men can find himself weak in the knees and a woman can find herself renewed and stronger than she ever felt. Life is full of words, many of which are never said with the force that drives them.

Yet there are times when all the force in the world cannot prevent a word from being uttered. Wedding vows are simply that, a single ripple of love that continues endlessly. Some believe wedding vows should be religiously based to convey the rules and define what marriage should be throughout the years. I find that wedding vows should be more personal, defining what length one is willing to go to in order to secure what they wish for another.

Wedding vows may dress up a wedding for others to hear and to simply convey what two people have come to feel. They are simple letters and words one after the other combining to make a solemn promise that is blessed by the gods and recognized throughout mankind as being the definition of unity. One afternoon, a few moments, and a lifetime begins. In the end when all is said and done, over time the vow becomes a defining moment in a family’s history, when that vow is fulfilled it creates a history unlike any other.
