Today it is very common after the wedding reception for the couple to leave for the honeymoon. Although the period of the honeymoon is in most cases less than a whole month, the event is something that has to happen after a wedding. But did you ever wondered where form comes the custom in having a honeymoon right after the wedding and since when people actually go in a honeymoon?

This custom is very old, but the whole concept of the honeymoon has changed a lot over the years. Now when think about a honeymoon, we think about love, romance and beautiful places where to relax before actually starting a new life, the married life. However, in the past, the honeymoon was a period in which the bride was hidden by the groom, until she got pregnant. In Scandinavia grooms abducted the girls and hided them until they got pregnant and then they put the girls’ families in front of an accomplished fact. They had nothing else to do than accept the marriage.

In other believes the honeymoon was period of a month in which the newlyweds dinked a honeyed wine with aphrodisiac properties to bring fertility to the new couple. This custom was known for ancient Teutons and Babylonians. This tradition is common in North European too, who believed that drinking the metheglin will attract all the good luck for their future married life.

Today the concept of the honeymoon is much different. The honeymoon is a period of a month, even if in most cases it is not actually a whole month, in which the groom and the bride goes to a nice location to celebrate alone their marriage. The honeymoon happens after the wedding, and for some Europeans the custom of leaving for the honeymoon after wedding was determined by the other custom of the groom’s friends trying to disturb the wedding night. The modern custom of the bride and groom to leave for a destination after the wedding ceremony really started in Victorian times in England because the bride and the groom did not have the chance to spend too much time together before the wedding, so this period was seen more like a chance for them to actually get to know each other.

Today, a successful honeymoon is the one in which the bride and her chosen one go in an exotic destination to relax after the stress caused by the whole wedding planning and have the best time of their life with the one they love. If you went on a honeymoon it does not mean that you have to return pregnant. In fact most brides do not want to get pregnant on their honeymoon. In many cases the honeymoon is planed with the care that the wedding was also planned. Every little detail of the vacation can be organized and planed before you actually get there.

It’s so nice to find out about what’s behind the honeymoon. I think we so many times take it for granted and don’t even give a damn about it. I know so many couples who had their honeymoons a long time after the wedding. It was mostly like a leave or something. The modern honeymoon, I think. Well, I don’t want a modern honeymoon, I want a very romantic one. And not exactly in an exotic place. Let’s be realistic about it. Sometimes you just cannot afford to go in an exotic place. But the real honey consists in the feelings the two people share and the way they choose to spend the first weeks as newly weds. And if they agree upon a romantic time together or one of visiting and exploring, who can stop them?
